“Rome Air Depot to Rome Army Air Field to Griffiss Air Force Base 1941 – 1947”

The WWII Years: The Story of Central New York’s Most Significant Military Installation

On September 17th at 6:30 PM, local historian James Coulthart will take attendees on a fascinating journey through the history of the Rome Air Depot, later known as Rome Army Air Field and Griffiss Air Force Base, covering the critical period from 1941 to 1947 during World War II.

This program explores the establishment and early development of one of Central New York's most significant military installations. Drawing from rare construction photographs, archival materials, and personal accounts, Coulthart will highlight the pivotal role this base played in both the region’s wartime efforts and its long-lasting impact on the community. The presentation will cover the transformation of the site from the initial construction of the depot to its rise as a key Army Air Force installation during WWII.

James Coulthart, a passionate local historian, will provide unique insights into the stories of those who lived and worked at the site during these formative years. With support from the Rome Historical Society and local contributors, Coulthart will present an in-depth look at the early history of the base and its importance to the war effort, from the construction of airfields to its operations during the height of WWII.

This is a rare opportunity to see seldom-viewed photographs and documents, and to hear firsthand accounts of the people who helped shape the history of what would later become Griffiss Air Force Base—a cornerstone of the local community for many years.
